Not to be confused with Zhiyuan Hu, the RegVelo co-first author — a different person. Hu Yizhou (胡益洲) contributed to the 2018 original RNA velocity preprocessing; he is not an author of RegVelo.

Who
A contributor to the 2018 origin RNA velocity paper’s preprocessing. In spring 2018 he reworked the velocity preprocessing with Gioele La Manno (before La Manno’s PhD defence) for Sten Linnarsson’s early STRT-seq data, anticipating reviewer questions — though the final paper did not require STRT-seq. Now at Karolinska. He is not an author of RegVelo; the similarly-named RegVelo co-first author Zhiyuan Hu is a different person.
Role in the 2026-06 correspondence
A collegial follow-up to JianhuaXing’s discussion, not a defence of any method (xing-hu-regvelo-debate):
- Recounts the 2018 origin: idea→submission in roughly half a year (Peter Kharchenko’s group pushing fast); velocity’s transcriptome-level assumptions had real flaws only flexibly worked around at the time.
- The Linnarsson division largely moved on from velocity (technical barriers, shifting directions); later groups refined the model, some for UX reasons.
- Agrees the JianhuaXing–Weissman critique caught some core problems, and praises Xing’s theory slides and long-arc program (theory → live-cell imaging → interpretable large-data models).
- Eight–nine years on, relies increasingly on lineage tracing for proof, but still keeps velocity as valuable auxiliary evidence (a pragmatic, non-polemic stance).
